I could have stayed in. Got into my pjs and studied up for the meet and greet speech Monday night I will be making but instead the warm breeze captivated my attention and a brief hello from a neighbor got me and the kids out into the fading sunlight. And I don’t regret it a bit.
They invited us over to pick Dewberries heavy in the patches. So of course I agreed. Along the way we were stopped by the friendliest chickens I’ve met in their yard. I had to stop to hold one.
My husband told me these were the biggest Dewberries he had ever seen “as big as your thumb” and of course the cynical that I am…didn’t believe him until I saw them and touched them and tasted them….call me doubting Thomas.
They were magnificent and though the stickers and thicket branches snagged my clothes and cut my skin I was determined to fill my container. My dad always covered berries in sugar and I wanted to do the same. The trick to eating berries with seeds is to squash the berry with your tongue against the roof of your mouth so you don’t get the seeds in your teeth. I forgot to tell my kiddos that as they shared berries with Jon straight from the vine.
He was filthy. Covered in berry juice but so so happy. I didn’t mind the stains at all. This is what childhood memories are made of.
An hour went by so quickly in their yard but those memories will last a long time. Thank you neighbor. I always thought having berries bushes would be too invasive to plant in my yard because I had seen them take over but he keeps his maintained and trimmed back after the season is over…..made me think. What other things or people have I refused to allow in my life because I thought they would be too invasive??? I just have to have the discipline to maintain….so that’s my thought for tonight. Thank you. Enjoy!!!! It’s time to bake a cobbler…Maybe two so I can bring one back to share!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
