I met this incredible lady on a podcast we did together months ago. She is an author of a book called Broken Silence. Please subscribe and show her love. Leave a comment and share her post. Thank you. January is National Human Trafficking awareness month.
Chong Kim breaks the silence that has muzzled generations of cultural oppression and unties the invisible “gag” that has muted the voices of Asian-Americans for centuries. Broken Silence is the unbridled testimony of one person’s account of cover-ups, racism, sexual abuse and human trafficking.
Thankful she agreed to share parts of her story with us. Enjoy and share!
Meet Chong Kim :
What is your career?
What is a goal you have that’s worth working for starting now?
Utilizing film, art, music and poetry to share awareness, share story, express pain and pass on wisdom to others.
What are you passionate about?
Creating a safe place for Children globally.
Can you explain what human trafficking in America means and looks like?
I believe it is misunderstood; In America on one hand we want to rescue the world, be the strong hold, but when corruption, scandal or severe abuse happens in our own backyard we cling onto ‘denial’. On the other hand we have those that want to fight the atrocity, but are receiving limited information, which makes our advocacy work limited.
What exactly made you passionate about being an advocate and bringing awareness to human trafficking in America?
When I became a mother, the fear of the very thing that took your life has a repeated cycle that can happen to your children if you’re not aware, careful or find the right help, cope and healing. I didn’t realize in the beginning it was a passion, I was just so afraid of my children being a by product of someone else and I had to survive, sacrifice my own selfish emotions to make sure my children wouldn’t have to go through or be susceptible becoming ‘at-risk’ kids.
What wins did you have this week?
My perseverance, my daily life I still battle with flashbacks, triggers, anxiety, PTSD and etc. But I continue to fight to get up, smile and move forward.
Can you begin by telling me what made you decide to follow your career path?
I wanted to leave a legacy behind and that was I did my best while here on earth to bring the truth of the corruption, the scandal and to let those who were willing to hear my voice to protect their children. If I remain silent and work in a regular job, I would not be at peace. I haven’t slept peacefully in years and through my coping and healing it is still difficult, but while I’m here and alive I want to change the world by being a voice.
What is there to be said of difficult life experiences and how can we transform them?
When we aren’t listening to each other. Shouting over each other, opposing views gets threatened and immediately defamed or bullied. How can we change the world when no one is listening?
When was the last time you were out of your comfort zone?
About two weeks ago, when I had to go through a sleep study in a lab. Being a survivor of child rape, I have learned to adapt to many changes, except when it comes to my face. I had a pillow over my face when I was a small child, I was suffocated by my own mother.. Ex boyfriends who tried to choke me to death, then when I was trafficked, I had a mask forced on my face. Repeated fist thrown in my face, because of those incidents I am afraid of the dentist, when I have to have surgery and they have to put a mask on me or when I have to use a Cpap or Bpap machine, I have to put something on my face. Nothing scares me more than having something on my face. That is stepping out of my comfort zone.
What is your favorite quote or mantra?
The best way to avenge your oppressors is to become the success they can never imagine.
My son’s father before he died shared that with me when I was still prostituting to survive on the street. He told me that what the traffickers did, still have no power over my future. I still hold the key to my own future.
If you had a magic wand and could change one thing in your life, what would it be and why?
I use to think about this alot when I was going through trafficking, now God has blessed me and taught me in ways I never thought he could so my answer would be none. To me God picked me up in my darkest time and taught me that I could do anything and turn my tragedy into triumph.
What advice would you give someone concerning Who they need to become in order to accomplish their wish/dream/goal?
I would first have them chant, “I am worthy.’
Survivors have dealt with verbal and emotional abuse, the evil words in their heads. They must learn to embrace their worth before they can begin to move on. The negative thinking from our past abusers are so strong and toxic.
When did you begin to feel like your true self?
When I began to live a sober life 2-22-2000
If you were the bravest version of yourself today, what would you be doing?
I am doing God’s will, he gave me a purpose and I am in awe of him.
What is keeping people from living their best life? Any ounce of insecurities.
Do you have a nonprofit organization you admire or contribute to?
Yes, Alert Ministries in Dallas; they do support groups at the Dallas Juvenile Detention Center and Women of the Well a survivor led ministry and shelter for victims/survivors of sex trade and trafficking.
How can individuals achieve goals without sacrificing their values?
I don’t know how to answer that, but let me share my example. I was pregnant at 21, my baby that I carried was my trafficker. I didn’t believe in abortion, but I also didn’t want my baby to be harmed by the trafficker, so I sacrificed my selfish love as a parent to be a mother first. I placed her for adoption so that she can be safe in someone else’s arms rather than mine. It was the most painful and difficult decision I ever made, but I don’t regret it. I don’t know if I answered your question, but when we weigh out the pros and cons of our situation along with sharing what we want to achieve, everything else begins to make sense.
How do we make our values a reality?
For me, I’m a go-getter. I just do it, but if I have some hesitancy or I need direction, then I pray and just listen. No rush and just be patient.
What are a few of your new year goals? Finishing up with my second book, “Save Me” which will be the inspiration for my TV series I want to launch about Human Trafficking.
